Origin of the company name

As a field worker, Charles Darwin created numerous specimens of plants and animals, and wrote "The Theory of Evolution," which remains the most influential work in the history of science. This great work teaches us that the most important thing in biology is to study it in the field, where living things live. However, in modern times, with the advancement of molecular biology, there are an increasing number of biologists who do not go out into the field.

I believe that the day will come when the importance of field science by field workers will be recognized again. Until that day comes, I want to continue to leave as much fieldwork technique as possible to the next generation, and as a reminder to myself to continue going out into the field, so I named my company "Field Workers."

Logo Design

The origin of our company's logo design is the motif of a mosquito pupa. Mosquito pupa is known to be very active, which is rare among insect pupae.

The name expresses the idea that the company will continue to move vigorously even during the maturation period, and has the potential to take flight in the future. The company registration date was set to June 6th, the day when male and female pupae move vigorously and appear to have reversed their momentum.

■ Background ■

FIELDWORKERS Co., Ltd. was founded on June 6, 2022 as a startup from the Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine, specializing in "manufacturing" of measures against sanitary pests that carry infectious diseases, such as mosquitoes and ticks. The Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine is the only public research institute in Japan that has been conducting infectious disease research for a long time since 1942, aiming to solve infectious disease problems. The wisdom of this good old tropical medicine institute is one of the best in the world. In particular, the knowledge gained from field research over more than 80 years is something to be proud of in the world. With these roots, our company is incorporating new technologies and renovating research techniques and equipment. We aim to be a Japanese company that can be proud of the world by overcoming infectious diseases caused by sanitary pests around the world.

■ ■ History ■ ■

- 2016 -

The beginning of our company's concept was my desire to give back to society through field research techniques and developed products that contribute to infectious disease control based on mosquito survey techniques.

- 2019 -

His experience as a research fellow at the London School of Tropical Medicine brought this idea closer to reality, as he saw in his host professor, who was both a university professor and an active businessman, an ideal model for the next generation of researchers.

- 2021 -

After returning from the UK, he received a seed development fund from the Kyushu University-based Venture Promotion Council, which paved the way for him to start his own business.

- 2022 -

Receiving six consecutive rejections of my research grants was the catalyst that led me to decide to start my own company. My anger and despair at the research grant system is what drives me to move forward.

■ ■ ■ Hope ■ ■ ■

If we can break away from the tax-dependent research funding system and become independent in the creation of research funds by doing business, a new group of scientists can be organized. Unless we minimize the impact of the shrinking national research funding and aim for stable development of young talent, Japan's future will be in danger. That's my feeling.

There is no time left to criticize the government for cutting research funding and demand improvements. We are convinced that the contribution we can make to science and society as a university-based startup is to use our brains to the fullest and create new industries.

As a startup company engaged in tropical medicine research, we aim to overcome infectious diseases caused by sanitary pests around the world, and we strive every day to grow into a Japanese company that can be proud of its global presence through the social implementation of innovative technologies.
