What are ticks? Basic information you should know

Hello everyone! Today, I would like to talk about ticks, the tiny creatures that live all around us. When you hear the word "tick," you may have a slightly scary image, but if you have the right knowledge and take precautions, you won't have to worry.

 

Basic information about ticks

Ticks are small creatures related to spiders that live in grass and forests. They are about 1-2 mm in size, but can grow to about 8 mm when they suck blood. The photo shows an adult Haemaphysalis flava tick. Amazingly, they have two pairs of four legs, making them a total of eight, so they are not insects!

 

Characteristics of ticks

  • They find prey by smell and temperature
  • They mainly live by sucking the blood of wild animals.
  • They live all over Japan
  • Ticks can bite you even in winter!

 

Why should I care?


Ticks sometimes suck human blood. And, although rare, they can carry diseases, so you need to be careful. There are three types of diseases that are prevalent in Japan, but there's no need to panic! As long as you know the correct prevention methods, you'll be fine.

 

How to protect yourself from ticks?

  2. Wear light-colored clothing (it's easier to see ticks)
  3. Use bug spray
  4. Wear a hat

 

What to do after you go out

  • Check your clothes and body carefully
  • Take a bath and check your body.
  • Washing clothes

 

What if I get bitten by a tick?


Don't panic, just follow these steps:

  1. Don't try to get it yourself!
  2. Go to the hospital immediately
  3. Get the right treatment from your doctor
  4. If you develop a fever after being bitten by a tick, be careful. Be sure to tell the hospital that you have been bitten by a tick.
